The Energy Service Company (ESCOs or ESCO) is a relativity new business model in Spain
According to Directive 2006/32/EC, natural or legal persons provide energy efficiency (power supply, installation and maintenance of production equipment and implementation of energy savings measures) for witch payment is (wholly or partly) linked to the achievement of theses savings.
It is expected that Spain ESCOs will generate an annual turnover of 1,500 million Euros through actions in both public buildings and private (residential, offices, tertiary).
The universe of ESCOs in Spain is made from large facility managers and equipment manufacturers to small engineering firms and installers.
ESCOs Business Model :
Although several types of contracts exist, the most extended in Spain is through a performance contract (EPC) between the ESCO and the customer, either through the system or shared savings guaranteed.
ESE services to the client include:
- Preliminary analysis of the economic and technical feasibility of the energy efficiency measures.
- Coordination with all parties involved in the design process and project implementation (installers, equipment suppliers, investors, utility companies).
- Control of the results obtained during the contract’s life
- In exchange, the ESE receives Client fees, which partially or completely depend on the energy savings achieved
